In spring of 2020, I purchased an unfinished 3B swapped 1994 Audi 90Q. While still living in Wyoming, I tore the car apart, fixed many things, put it back together. A brief list: VEMS optioned for AAN with the LS coils, billet wheel k24-7400 turbo, Wagner evo intercooler, Bosch 550CC injectors and 044 pump, LWFW and uprated clutch/pressure plate, JHM shifter and bolted up to an 01A (I know, it’s sacrilege), light engine machine work & fresh bearings on the bottom end and ARP bolts and studs throughout, 5-lug, UrS brakes. It runs beautifully. That said, the previous owner cut up the fenders and quarters for wheel fitment, the paint color is not to my taste and the clear is trashed anyways. Various interior and exterior molding was damaged or improperly installed, seats are not great, some shoddy wiring, missing parts/pieces that are impossible to find… the usual we all have come to expect from most of the Audi 90’s on the various online marketplaces. To the previous owner’s credit, the 5-lug swap was done well, he sourced 99% of the parts which made my life easy, and he spent a pretty penny on some very nice parts. My belief is the project got expensive he and just threw the car together good enough to get it sold.. fine by me, it was a steal despite the work I needed to do.
After it was all said and done, I loaded it on a trailer and moved it to California.
Now for the good part. I have finally found a unicorn low mileage body! I plan to dismantle the dilapidated 90Q and swap my 3B and quattro system over to the mint 90S. The dismantled 90Q will be parted out and eventually scrapped (and probably shipped to China to be made into lawn furniture). The goal is to keep the mint 90 styling as OEM (as possible) except for wheels and converting from FWD V6 to 20 valve I5 turbo quattro. Under the hood and inside the car, I want the creature comforts of a semi-modern car, such as AC and power steering. Neither of which I’ve had with the beater body. I also like the feel of the stock suspension because Southern California roads are worse for wear and coilovers don’t absorb impact loads in the same manner that big, tall springs on heavy duty struts do. Which is why I’m sadly selling my BC Coilovers. Those coilovers have exceeded my expectations and would certainly suit a more track ready car. Again, goal here is a fun yet comfortable streetcar that’s not hard to look at. One new development is to run 3.70 final drive instead of the 3.889. I feel like that would balance the car really well for my uses. I have also sourced an authentic Wagner evo exhaust manifold and the garret GT3071 BB turbo with all other supporting items. Later, I’d like to upgrade engine internals but for now, I’ll just run a conservative 91 tune.
I have a list going for what I need to buy and sell (if interested to see the list, pm your email to me and I’ll send it in a word doc). This will also be posted in the classified area once I have the parts pulled and tagged. This is going to be my second I5 swap and probably 20th time removing/installing an Audi engine. So, I’m not green but I’m no expert either. I’m sure I will have questions and concerns along the way. I have hit a wall for sourcing the AC parts, so if anyone has a line on those items, man you’d be doing me a big favor. Over the years I have acquired some additional and unneeded parts like a 3B block and head. I bought those for parts only and they definitely need to spend some time at the machine shop if anyone has intent to use them.
I have added some pictures to show the work I’ve done to this point.
