Project: my first 20v

I have been making progress on this over the week. A couple hours here and there, so nothing is going very fast. I did get most of the hole closed up though. I split into 2 panels, and tacked them into place.


Not perfect, but they fit decently. I have a spot that I need to make a weirdly shaped piece for and weld it in. Here is after a lot more welding. Not going to win any awards, but it's solid enough.


I'm going to run a patch from the corner where the third patch panel is still needed up towards the front about 6". It looks weak in that area, and I'd rather do it now then have a random hole show up later.

Spent a couple hours in the garage age this morning. Made the last patch panel, and welder it in!


Only thing left is weld on the muter mount hook. After that was done, I went around scrubbing all the other rusty looking area, then hit it with with rust converting paint.



Came out ok. Ill clean up the welded area, and seam seal them. Then a good coating of undercoat should keep it good for a long time!

That's funny! I haven't heard from him in forever!

I opted to fix/keep it because that's really the only bad looking part. Im hoping it doesn't prove me wrong in the near future

There's always a chance something new will rear it's ugly head, but these are rare beasts. Worth keeping by numbers alone, and they're just special to drive and enjoy all that aside.

Well, tonight is my last night working for a while. I am officially furloughed starting Monday. Who knows how long it will be before I go back to work. Maybe I'll get this back together in that time...

I have most of the parts to put the CQ back together. We will see how far I get on my time off.

Putting the BOS header on, and have a couple questions.

The gaskets have a metal side to them. Does that go to the head, or to the manifold?

Second, do I need the really thick washers for the BOS header?

Third, what is the torque spec for the lock nuts?

Spent most of today putting most of the engine together. Head got torqued down, that was... Fun... Then finding all the bolts to put everything else on was most of the time spent. Oh well, it's almost ready to take off the stand, and get a trans bolted to it. I don't want to set the timing until the trans is attached. Last thing I want to do it set the timing wrong at this point.

I'm trying to make a decision. The plan as of now, is to sell this when it's road worthy again. The transmission is currently an unknown. I have a good sedan transmission which everyone knows has a better 5th gear.

The decision I need to make is, should I swap the trans when I put the engine in, or, leave the CQ trans in, and offer the next owner the sedan trans with the car?

Obviously I'm looking at a little more work on my part to swap the trans, but would it make it better in the end?

Any reason to suspect that there is a problem with the one that’s in the car ?

Well, the car has been sitting for around 6 years, and no one knows the condition of the trans before sitting.

The sedan trans has a taller(or shorter I don't remember) 5th gear, so lower RPM on the highway.

Lower RPMs in 5th would be nice, but is the difference (0.77:1 vs 0.84:1) worth it? Based on an old online calculator I used, it would translate to about 300 RPMs at 80 mph. I'd say yes, if you were to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Not so sure since you're looking to sell it.

I'd tend to agree with Brent.

If you sell it with a spare trans as an enticement you're likely to dissuade the casual hobby car crowd. Or put another way, you'll (hopefully) attract the type of buyer who's likely to take care of the car and hopefully keep it for a while. Someone who's not afraid to get their hands dirty and has space for parts storage.

I'm thinking I'm just going to leave the CQ trans in it. I'll probably drain the oil through some screen and see if it has anything in it. If I find chunks, then I guess I'll be swapping it. Otherwise, it will be an "additional part" to go with it. Along with the euro headlights, and 5 lug hubs that no one seems to want...

That's actually the main reason I haven't gone 5 lug on my 80q. I really like the multiple sets of 4 lug wheels I have for it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to put the 80 comp wheels on the CQ and keep the borbet wheels I got with it for the 80q.

So today was generally a good day in the garage. Got quite a bit done! Cleaned up the sedan transmission(previous post) and got the CQ trans out!


Things moved along ok after that. After figuring out what I had been doing wrong trying to get the hydro boost unit out, I set about cleaning up the vacuum booster I picked up. A little love with a wire wheel before some paint... NOPE! Damnit!


The hits just keep on coming! I wasn't even hitting the ring hard at all, so that must have been hiding under the rust.

A good friend offered me a B2 booster. Does anyone know if they are comparable?

I’ve used B2 booster yeah . I think they are the same , and b4 is similar but 1” larger diameter.

Hey it’s a good thing you found that because a tiny little leak like that one one side of the diaphragm or another can cause all sorts of weird issues

I'll be checking out one later today. From what I have been told, as long as it has the adjustable rod it should be good to go. I have parts he wants, so it will probably be a parts exchange.
