Yes you can use the b3 slave. I'm currently using the metal b4 one in my fyf 01e. I just unbolted it and let it hang until I reinstalled the transmission, no bleeding that way.

It has a different fitting for the hydraulic line. At least what I received does.

Slaves are the same 01A/01E but I'd look for a metal 01E version if you have to replace it anyway.

I ordered another 95 90Q slave - the B5 S4 slave I bought is definitely different and getting returned:

Is it just because of the hard line fitting? Everything B5 (01A and 01E) is the same slave, but I guess the B3/B4 chassis might use a different kind of fitting. Other than that there literally can't be any differences dimension ways; they're the same trans as a B5 after all.

correct. B5 and later is typically plastic and uses a different style of fitting. B3/B4 are typically metal and use an M10x1 threaded fitting.

For the B4 metal slave cylinder.
M12X1.0 on the inlet hose fitting from the clutch master to the clutch slave.
M10X1.0 on the bleeder screw fitting.
